Dietrich Schmidt-Vogt

Honorary Professor

Dietrich Schmidt-Vogt is a Geographer and Honorary Professor at the Chair of Silviculture of Freiburg University, Germany, since 2015. Previous affiliations were with University of Central Asia, Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China, Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, and South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, Germany. Spanning 40 years of research experience in Asia, his research interests include forest-farming interactions, multifunctional landscapes, integrated land use systems, and land use change and livelihoods in mountains. He has extensive experience in teaching and supervising Master and PhD students from diverse national and cultural backgrounds, as well as in capacity building and curriculum development for academic institutions in Asia.

Dr. Hoang received his PhD in Silviculture from Freiburg University, Germany. He is currently the director of IREN, a senior lecturer in Hue University, a visiting lecturer of Cologne University of Applied Science, Germany and Okayama University, Japan. His work focuses specifically on climate change, rural development, tropical silviculture, forest ecology, application of GIS and RS in natural resources and environmental management, and social networking and communication. Hoang has over 20-year experience worked as the leader and coordinator of various projects relating to climate change, capacity building, livelihood enhancement, ecosystem-based adaptation, and natural resources conservation and management at regional and global scales.

Dr. Dinh Tien Tai received his Ph.D in Plant Ecology from Okayama University, Japan. He is currently working as a researcher in Institute of Resources and Environment (IREN), Hue University. He has over 10 years of working experience in ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation and forestry projects. His researches focus on forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, applied biostatistics and GIS and RS application in natural resources and environmental management. He has experience in experimental design, data analysis, and project evaluation. He has a good ability in working with local people and other stakeholders in ecological, biodiversity and forestry projects and a good skill in data analysis and visualization with R and Python.

Dr. Do Thi Xuan Dung is currently Vice-President for Science-Technology and International Relations at Hue University, Vietnam. She is a senior lecturer of English language and Linguistics, TESOL, and Cross-cultural studies. She has been working in international cooperation for higher education for twenty years and in ERASMUS CBHE project management for eight years. She is presently coordinating two ERASMUS+ projects and has been involved in eleven other similar projects implemented at Hue University.

Dr. Mai got B.Sc. in Silviculture in 1996 from Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry (HUAF). Then she was pointed out as a lecturer at HUAF in the same year. In 1999, she started her master's degree at Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), where she received her Master of Science in Social Development in 2001. In 2010, she enrolled in Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen (Germany) for her doctoral study and successfully graduated with a Ph.D. in natural resource management in 2015. She has more than 20 years teaching and researching modules and issues related to gender in natural resource management; rural/community development; livelihood and forest resource management; forest policy, Forestland use, and community forestry; resource economic and environment. Dr. Thang got his PhD in Natural Resource Management from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. He is currently a lecturer in Hue University, Vietnam. He has over 20 years’ experience working as leader and key member in projects of training and capacity building relating to climate change, livelihood improvement and biodiversity conservation. Dr. Thang has significant experience in FLEGT, REDD+, participatory governance assessment and Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES).

He also worked as fellow of International Poverty Reduction Center, China. He is a life member of Bangladesh Agricultural Extension Society (BAES), International Society for Development and Sustainability (ISDS), and Australasia-Pacific Extension Network (APEN). He has published about 50 journal articles in national and international journals as author and coauthor. He has worked as project manager and coordinator in several donor funded international projects including World Bank and Nuffic.

Project Manager of FORSU

Dr. Suprio Chakma has over 16 years’ experiences of coordinating field work and implementing different projects in the biodiversity conservation sector. He has completed his PhD on Large Mammals of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh with emphasis on Tiger (Panthera Tigris ) from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Currently, he is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Biological Science and Chairman of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science in RMSTU where he joined in 2020. Before joining RMSTU, Dr. Chakma worked for Wildlife Conservation Society, a world leading conservation NGO as Marine Megafauna Program Manager. Keen on herpetology later turned in large mammals study; expertise in wildlife study design, survey, data analysis and technical report writing. He has experiences of manging donor funds such as USFWS and USAID. Dr. Suprio had worked in all forested areas of Bangladesh and participated many national and international training and conferences held in India, Nepal and Malaysia.

Dr. Nikhil Chakma has more than 12-year of professional working experiences at national and international development organizations/academic instituions in Bangladesh. His major field of expertise include National Forest inventory, food security, extreme poverty, natural resource mangement, biodiversity and conservation, crop pest management, and overall livelihood development of the rural people. He did PhD in Bamboo and rodent ecology from University of Dhaka, Bachelor (Honours) and Master in Forestry from the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. He has more than 10 publications related to his field of expertise. He attended and presented scientific research findings in different national and international seminars/conference/workshops/training in United States of America (USA), Germany, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and Philippines.

He obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Agriculture Science) at Kyushu University, Japan. He is professor in Wood Science at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry. He has many years of experience on student affairs and curriculum evaluation as a Vice Dean of Forestry Faculty. Duong Van Thao curently is head of Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperations. Before that, he served as the Dean of the Forestry Faculty. He is senior lecturer in forest genetics and silviculture at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF), Vietnam. Much of his research is in the areas of silviculture and forest genetic conservation. Beside academic roles, he has been working actively with both domestic & international partners in promoting collaboration activities such as technology transfer, joint research projects, student & faculty mobility. Thao graduated from Kyushu University, Japan with a PhD Degree in Forest genetics. He earned his Master Degree in Forestry from the Australian National University, Australia. Before that, he graduated from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Vietnam with a Bachelor Degree in Forestry.

Contributed to the development of Forestry curricula in Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Nepal.

Nicholas Hogarth ,has over 12-years’ experience living and working in the Global South on forestry and rural development issues, including field-research and capacity-building. Geographical foci include China, Laos, Indonesia, and Cambodia, but he also has long-term experience co-managing a 24-country research project on forests and livelihoods. He has also worked as a consultant for the UN, CIFOR, Australian Aboriginal Corporations, and others. Key expertise include: analysing rural livelihoods, design of household data collection tools, field-based data collection, quantification of forest & environmental income, forest landscape restoration, small and large-scale tree plantations, bamboo, scientific writing and editing, systematic reviews, project monitoring and evaluation.

Adrian Monge , has been working on research and capacity building projects in Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America over the last 20 years. His experience includes teaching forestry and environmental issues in Finland and abroad, preparation, coordination and implementation of e-learning courses, drafting and submitting research and development cooperation proposals. Key expertise areas include developing digital tools for data collection, forest and climate change (adaptation and mitigation), forest inventories and management, participatory research, and ecosystem services.
